# How to Send Photos to MDC Brooklyn

> How to send photos to MDC Brooklyn: the federal P.O. box address, Register Number, BOP mail rules and why your loved one receives a color copy of each photo.

Published October 10, 2026 in Mail & Facility Rules

To send photos to someone at MDC Brooklyn, mail them to the federal jail's inmate mail P.O. box, P.O. Box 329002, Brooklyn, NY 11232, with the person's full name and 8-digit Register Number. Since November 2024, the Bureau of Prisons has photocopied general mail, including photos, at its institutions other than minimum-security facilities, so your loved one receives a color copy of each photo rather than the print.

This guide covers the exact address, the Register Number, the mail rules the BOP enforces and how to keep your envelope from being rejected. Rules change, so we keep our [MDC Brooklyn facility page](https://inmatepics.com/facilities/new-york/mdc-brooklyn) up to date.

## Mailing address for photos

MDC Brooklyn (Metropolitan Detention Center, Brooklyn) is a federal detention center run by the Federal Bureau of Prisons. Its official [BOP facility page](https://www.bop.gov/locations/institutions/bro/) lists this address for inmate mail:

```
[Full name], Reg. No. [Register Number]
MDC BROOKLYN
METROPOLITAN DETENTION CENTER
P.O. BOX 329002
BROOKLYN, NY 11232
```

A few things to know:

- **Use the P.O. box, not the street address.** MDC Brooklyn's street address is 80 29th Street, but the BOP lists P.O. Box 329002 for mail to people in custody.
- **Don't send money to this address.** The BOP says funds sent by mail go to a central processing center in Des Moines, Iowa, for every federal prisoner, wherever they're held.
- **Packages need prior approval.** The BOP doesn't allow packages from home without written approval from the person's unit team. Books and magazines must come directly from the publisher.

You can find other federal and New York facilities on our [New York page](https://inmatepics.com/facilities/new-york).

## The ID number you need

Everyone in federal custody has an **8-digit Register Number**, written as five digits, a hyphen and three digits (for example, 12345-678). It stays the same for that person.

To find it:

- Search the person's name in the [BOP inmate locator](https://www.bop.gov/inmateloc/). The results show their Register Number and current location.
- Confirm the locator lists **MDC Brooklyn** before you send. People in pretrial detention are often moved after court dates or sentencing.
- If the locator shows a Residential Reentry Management office, the person is in a halfway house or on home confinement, and mail can't go through MDC Brooklyn.

When you order through InmatePics, we check the BOP locator to confirm the name and that the person is at the facility you chose. Our guide on [sending photos to federal prison](https://inmatepics.com/guides/sending-photos-to-federal-prison) explains Register Numbers in more detail.

## Photo rules

BOP policy bans photos showing nudity or sexual acts, and Polaroids aren't allowed. Since the November 2024 change to how federal prisons handle mail, the BOP also says:

- **General correspondence must be on plain white paper in a white envelope.**
- **No glitter, stickers, lipstick, crayon or marker.** Mail with these is rejected.
- **No labels** on incoming general mail (with narrow exceptions, such as labels from approved publications).
- **No perfume, cologne or other fragrances.** Scented mail is rejected.
- **Stained mail, or mail with suspicious substances, is rejected.**

How we send to MDC Brooklyn:

- **Size:** standard 4x6 photo prints.
- **Number:** up to 10 photos in each envelope, with larger orders split into separate envelopes.
- **Content we screen for:** nudity, sexual content, gang signs, weapons, drugs and money.

Choose photos where everyone is fully dressed and there are no hand signs or anything that could look like illegal activity. For more, read our post on [what photos are allowed in prison and jail](https://inmatepics.com/blog/what-photos-are-allowed-in-prison).

## What your loved one receives

In October 2024, the Bureau of Prisons [announced](https://www.bop.gov/news/20241016-message-from-the-director-and-cpl-33-president.jsp) that starting in November 2024, at institutions other than minimum-security facilities, all general correspondence, **including photos and commercial greeting cards**, would be photocopied, and only the copies given to the person. The BOP said photos would be copied in color.

MDC Brooklyn isn't a minimum-security facility, so your loved one receives a **color photocopy of each photo**. It's still a real, physical picture they can hold, keep and look at whenever they want. Clear, well-lit photos with good contrast tend to copy best.

InmatePics shows you what the person will receive before you pay. For MDC Brooklyn, that's a color copy.

## Step by step

1. **Find the Register Number** in the BOP inmate locator and confirm they're at MDC Brooklyn.
2. **Choose your photos.** Pick clear pictures that follow the content rules above.
3. **Start your order** at [inmatepics.com/send](https://inmatepics.com/send). Upload your photos and crop each one to a 4x6 print.
4. **Choose MDC Brooklyn** and enter their name and Register Number. We check the BOP locator to confirm they're there.
5. **Review and pay.** Prints are $0.99 each plus $4.99 per envelope, with no subscription. Ten photos in one envelope cost $14.89.
6. **We print and mail it.** Our printing and mailing partners print real photos and mail them, addressed the way MDC Brooklyn requires.

We remove location data from your photos and delete them once your order is done.

## Tips to avoid returned mail

- **Always include the Register Number** with the full name, written as five digits, a hyphen and three digits.
- **Use P.O. Box 329002,** not the 29th Street address.
- **Keep it plain.** White envelope, white paper, no stickers, labels, glitter, lipstick or perfume.
- **Never send Polaroids.**
- **Don't include money.** Funds go through the BOP's Des Moines processing center, not the facility.
- **Check the locator right before you send.** Pretrial detainees can be moved after court dates, sentencing or transfers.
